Today, on 3rd Street in Downtown Hillsboro, the best sale on books in the history of the world will happen as Arcade Book Exchange finishes its last day in Hillsboro.ย  All books are 10 cents!ย  For 52 years, this bookstore with its tens of thousands of books has been a staple of historic old town Hillsboro. Lori Carroll bought Jan’s Paperbacks in Beaverton in 2018 and the Arcade Book Exchange in 2024.ย  Beloved former owner, Diane Francis, was overjoyed when Carrol purchased the store in 2024, as she felt her life’s work was in great hands.ย ย However, the struggling economy and serious conflicts with theย Flip Museum,ย which occupies the formerย Sequoia Gallery, led to her decision to exit Hillsboroโ€”more on those conflicts in an upcoming story.

Arcade Book Store Final day

Today is the last day – and ALL BOOKS ARE 10 Cents!

11:30 Am to 3:30 PM

136 SE 3rd Ave, Ste 300, Hillsboro, OR, United States, Oregon

Arcade Book Exchange

Here is a message from Lori from her Facebook Post a month or so ago:

It’s never easy to share sad news, but it has to be done. As you all know, Dianna retired last year, and we took over the store in the hopes of keeping it open. Whether it’s the lack of Dianna’s spirit at the counter, the economy, or the negative impact of The Flip Museum coming into the building, Arcade has not made enough money to survive.
On top of the financial issues, there have been pretty consistent trespasses made upon our little bookstore by the management of The Flip Museum that have made it untenable to keep moving forward in that space.
The good news is that we have found a space to move both Jan’s and Arcade Book Exchange into that we think is going to be amazing! It will be a little bit of a trek, but we are happy to say that we will still have a bookstore in Washington County. We’ve signed the lease but are waiting for the fully executed document to come back before we share the address.
All that being said, we’ll be having a bunch of sales in the next 6 weeks to try to lighten the move load.
Stay tuned for more updates!

NOW ON TO THE SALE!!!

IF YOU CAN HELP MOVE THE FINAL BOOKS TOMORROW AND BREAK THE STORE DOWN – PLEASE DO!

We will miss the Arcade Book Exchange, and are so sorry that the tenant conflicts that could not be resolved by the City, who subleases the space to the Flip Museum, had anything to do with this decision!ย  ย Today, it’s time to grab some books and show your support for their closing day!
Sound off below if you would like to show your support for the store on its last day!
