Statement on Press Freedom and Public Accountability
At the Hillsboro Herald, we believe the role of a free press is to document events in our community — even when they are uncomfortable or controversial. Journalism is not a crime, and it is not an endorsement.
Recently, the Herald received a message attempting to intimidate our publication over a report involving a local citizen and law enforcement activity. The Herald stands by the public’s right to see and understand what happens in their community. The footage shared in our story was publicly available, and our coverage falls squarely within the protections of the First Amendment and the Oregon Constitution.
We do not condone violence or lawlessness. We report — truthfully and without fear — on issues that affect the people of Hillsboro.
Attempts to threaten, silence, or criminalize journalism only reinforce the need for transparency and accountability.
We thank our readers for continuing to support independent reporting in Hillsboro. The Herald remains committed to shining light where it’s needed most.
