Theatre is heating up in Downtown Hillsboro

Spring is arriving in Downtown Hillsboro, and with it comes an exciting surge of live theatre experiences. March offers audiences the chance to experience two unique theatrical events within just a few blocks of each other—proving once again that Downtown Hillsboro’s Cultural Arts District is a vibrant hub for arts and culture.

A World Premiere at HART Theatre

Downtown Hillsboro’s own Hillsboro Artists’ Regional Theatre (HART) opens the world premiere of Alma de Luna on March 14, running through March 29.

Written by David Fuks and directed by Humberto Mugnai, Alma de Luna tells the story of Luna Gomez, a young woman growing up in a home shaped by grief after the death of her sister. As Luna confronts her family’s past, the lingering spirit of her sister Alma reveals how love, memory, and healing can transcend generations.

This heartfelt new work blends realism with touches of magical realism and centers on a Mexican-American family navigating loss, hope, and reconciliation. As a world premiere production, audiences in Hillsboro will be the first to experience this moving new play on stage.

One Weekend Only at Bag & Baggage

Just a few blocks away, professional theatre company Bag & Baggage Productions presents the chamber opera Dies Irae, Desirée at The Vault Theater for one weekend only: March 13–15.

Created by composer Maria Finkelmeier with libretto by Brady Evan Walker, this immersive and satirical opera explores modern belief systems, internet culture, and the strange appeal of fringe movements. The story follows Desirée, a charismatic online personality who leads followers in a UFO-inspired cult promising cosmic enlightenment.

Combining live music, theatrical storytelling, and multimedia elements, this limited run production offers a bold and thought-provoking theatrical experience.
