Fire in Hillsboro Data Center Raises Alarms Over Battery Hazards

Hillsboro Fire Department Battalion Chief Piseth Pich of Hillsboro Fire & Rescue told local media that firefighters arriving at 10:20 a.m. found “batteries on fire that were contained to one room. The smoke was so thick that they could hardly see.”

Fire crews defied the flames from spreading, effectively letting the battery bank burn itself out; the blaze was declared out by 3:30 p.m. No injuries were reported, and all workers were evacuated safely.
“The cause of the fire remains under investigation,” Pich added, even as industry press reports suggest the fire was linked to a backup-power battery system.

Elon Musk’s social media firm X (formerly Twitter) reportedly leased the Hillsboro facility. Industry and government sources say X’s engineering team “acknowledged” on Friday that the site was suffering a data center outage, as thousands of users around the globe reported login failures and sluggish service. According to Wired and other outlets, the fire was “traced to a room housing lithium batteries” in the X-leased data center. A post from X’s engineering account stated: “X is aware some of our users are experiencing performance issues… We are experiencing a data center outage and the team is actively working to remediate the issue.”
Digital Realty – the landlord of the Hillsboro site – offered only terse updates to news outlets. In a statement to The Oregonian, the company said, “the incident is under control, and the fire department has concluded its on-site response. All personnel were safely evacuated, with no reported injuries.” It also claimed to be “prioritizing the safety of our personnel, the integrity of the facility, and minimizing customer impact.” But Digital Realty declined to confirm whether X occupied the affected building or to offer any explanation for what ignited the fire or how much damage was done inside.
Data Center Batteries Are A Lesser-Known Threat

The benefits are hard to see when considering environmental issues, power rates, water usage, and the monopolization of industrial lands.
Now we have to worry about Battery fires? Wow. Experts warn that lithium-ion battery blazes can release a cocktail of toxic emissions far more dangerous than ordinary fires. Data center firefighting specialists note that, unlike a building fire, a battery conflagration can self-intensify and reignite, releasing superheated smoke and toxic gases. Tests of burning Li-ion cells have found they emit hydrogen fluoride and other acidic fluorine gases in prodigious quantities. These gases can scar lungs, burn skin, and even etch glass. Worse, soot and heavy metal particulates from battery fires can drift for miles; scientists have found contamination of cobalt, nickel, manganese, and other toxic metals around large battery storage sites.

The impact of this blaze on local health is still uncertain. Although the smoke was mostly contained inside the building, some fumes inevitably leaked out while crews cooled the batteries. Emergency officials urged anyone in the immediate area to stay indoors with windows shut and air filters running. Following the Moss Landing battery fire in California, environmental tests found metals in nearby soil at “100 to 1,000 times higher than normal,” and residents reported skin, eye, and respiratory issues. In Oregon, no such tests or disclosures have yet been made.
The incident has renewed questions about where such data centers should be located and regulated. Hillsboro’s Tech Park is zoned commercial/industrial but only a mile from residences and schools. Do the data centers have automatic fire suppression systems? If they don’t, they should.
I am sure they have that. But they can not put out a Lithium Battery Fire with water. My understanding is that this is very hard to do.
I don’t mean a sprinkler system. A foam system or other agent for suppressing Lithium Fires.
Gotcha –
Most data centers and IT network closets have a Halon or some other kind of inert gas suppression system.
No, most are protected by VESDA and smoke detector systems that fire off double-interlock pre-action suppression that uses water. Halon is long obsolete – now there are other inert gas systems that deprive a fire of the oxygen it needs to burn, but those are generally used in small spaces, not in the large electrical rooms or the even larger data halls that the PDX11 site has.
Different battery chemistries have different risks. LFP batteries which are used in most stationary backups are safer than NMC batteries that are more common in electric vehicles. (NMC batteries have more energy density for farther range / LFP have longer lifespans but less energy)
Early Tesla Powerwalls used NMC batteries because those are the cells that Tesla tooled up for their EV but Powerwall 3 product use LFP batteries.
You can put out an Lithium battery fire with water – with the correct tools. Most fire departments do not have those tools. Just spraying water on a battery doesn’t work because the fire is inside a steel box so the water cannot get to the fire. To put out a battery fire you need to pierce the case so the water actually gets to the fire. Rosenbauer and their “BEST” piercing nozzle is one example.
Another solution would be a universal standard quick connect that firefighters could attach to the battery case (EV or stationary battery) and would allow water to get inside the battery case and flood it. Of course that would take regulation and in the USA we aren’t known for being proactive.

I’m not sure if you know this but those data centers house more than just a single client. You should stop fear mongering and report facts. You write this like we are in danger, I don’t even like data centers and you put my hackles up with your writing. Yes lithium battery fires are dangerous. Data centers house many fire suppression systems and have measures in place to keep fires from spreading from room to room. I get Elon is a hot button topic but the majority of data centers out here house both X, Starlink, Meta, Google, TikTok, Amazon, and your local ISP among many other clients domestic and foreign, it’s part of why you can do easily access the everything on the internet.
PDX11 came in during the tail end of 2021, so not quite four years ago. I don’t think anyone’s surprised that there are batteries on site, but it’s kind of surprising that a site that new would lack the fire suppression systems necessary to deal with a five-hour blaze that prevents local fire personnel from fighting it themselves. But considering the corners of the community that are averse to relatively simple solutions like vaccination and fill their business profiles with religious tracts and speculation about chemtrails, perhaps it isn’t surprising that those folks would rather just let it burn and see what happens. They’re fairly consistent in that approach to just about everything.
And while data centers tend to house more than one client, those firewalls make it really easy to determine responsibility when one particular room roasts for, say, five hours at a clip. So the ticker of record we’re looking for here isn’t $GOOG, isn’t $AMZN, isn’t $META, and isn’t “your local ISP” (oh, let’s just go crazy and say $CMCSA). It isn’t much for either local responders, government, or surrounding businesses to ask that $X take some responsibility here. “I get Elon is a hot button topic”—oh, is Elon Musk an important figure at X? Might certain decisions made at that company since its purchase in 2022 have some bearing on elements of its operation? Might neighboring communities be concerned about elements of those operations that may not meet health and safety requirements?

Our neighbors at OVHcloud already learned this lesson in France, when a data center fire in Strasbourg didn’t kill anyone, but led to 140 lawsuits against them after both the resulting fumes and illnesses and customer service disruptions. Also, speaking of your reminder of the multiple tenants of each data center, we’re only about 10 years removed from the Samsung data center fire that knocked out the company’s devices wholesale.
