Protest Today: Washington County Democrats Speak Out on Sanctuary and Immigration

Support Sought For Commissioner Fai's Ammendment To Tuesday Resolution

Update:  The Herald stopped by the rally and interviewed leader Callie Peters about the changes coming this week and the effort to alter the outcome by Commissioner Nafisa Fai.

The Washington County Democrats Rapid Response Action Group will be holding a protest today at the Washington County Courthouse.  Next Tuesday, the Washington County Commissioners plan to introduce a Resolution that clarifies how Washington County will comply with all laws and rules of the Trump Administration.  These sorts of Resolutions seek to abide by the White House to avoid being defunded.  Let’s face it, he has a gun to the head of all states and Counties, and he plans to use it financially. Crafting new resolutions is a tricky business, but the sitting commissioners have done so and intend to pass them.  The devil, however, is always in the details.

Commissioner Nafisa Fai has an amendment to this pending Resolution that the Washington County Democrats want to push through.  Fai has demonstrated exceptional leadership in recent months, consistently standing up for immigrants, taxpayers, and the working class more effectively than anyone in Washington County.  The Herald will be following this story, and it appears that Chair Kathryn Harrington, who is embroiled in ethics investigations and an internal investigation over the CWS debacle, is once again trying to push something through with little to no public input and the force of her aggressive personality.

SO- The Protest:

Who: Direct Action of WashCo Dems Rapid Response Protest

What: Adopt community-driven language as recommended by Commissioner Nafisa Fai in the Access and Opportunity Resolution to be voted on by the WashCo County Commissioners on July 22nd

Why: Strengthen immigrant protections as a sanctuary state. This is within Washington County’s legislative powers as a county under home county rule. If WashCo signs the federal grants, they agree to follow all Executive Orders unless outlined by the aforementioned resolution.

Where: Washington County Court House

When: 4 to 6 PM on Saturday July 19th

Please continue with protections of immigrants and keeping this state a Sanctuary state. Immigrants are being unfairly targeted and quite honestly it is having a terribly polarizing effect on our political landscape. Please do not pander to this bully President’s unconstitutional wishes. We can all do better!

I’m tired of this State being a sanctuary state and my city as well! I think illegal’s need to go back to their country. If they can pay someone a couple of thousand dollars to bring them here illegally then they should be able to pay to come here legally! Plain and Simple! Enough Said!

Ok. Post your address and we will have ICE head over with no badges or warrants and arrest you with no Due Process. That ok? That is all anyone is asking for. So are you an American and believe in the constituition or just rather have a Facist State run by the current regime? Asking for a friend.

If there was a system that actually worked for people to come legally I believe the majority would use it. It’s not humane to make poor people seeking a better life pay for the inability of our congress to fix the system. Let’s face it this administration doesn’t even want legal immigrants unless they are white. See you in the lettuce fields.
