Tomorrow, Thursday Jan. 28 at 5:30pm, the Port of Portland will host a Zoom webinar to discuss an upcoming improvement project for the ‘safety area’ at the north end of Hillsboro Airport’s main runway (13R-13L). The project site is near NE 25th Avenue’s junction with Evergreen Road.
The safety area is a designated zone, required by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), that extends from a runway’s end and is kept vacant and in smooth condition in case of an unexpected emergency during an airplane’s takeoff or landing. The FAA has standards for safety areas’ general state and maintenance. The one at the north end of Hillsboro Airport’s main runway does not meet the current FAA standards.
The proposed project will include a regrading of the safety area to fix the slope and smooth out humps, ruts, and depressions. Additionally, a portion of Glencoe Swale running across the safety area will be rerouted through an underground culvert. Here’s a link to the project information website.
There is no public comment period at this time but the webinar will be your chance to ask questions of project staff. Questions sent in advance (to Maureen.Minister@portofportland.com) will be answered during the webinar. Also, the project team’s responses to clarifying questions will be posted on the project’s website following the webinar.
Those who desire to attend the Zoom webinar must pre-register at this Web page.
