Editors Note:  The Parks Department has been tasked with something they do not normally get involved with.  Cutting down street trees and replanting new ones is typically not in their wheelhouse. I am glad to see them involved.  Of all the City of Hillsboro agencies, I would put Parks and Recreation way up at the top.  The cherry trees coming down are being replaced with Crepe Myrtles – a non-native tree that handles warmer climates.  That selection touched off some hearty debate on the Park’s Facebook Page.  I like this choice.  How do you feel?  Please leave your comments below well locals are encouraged to take part in our community.
News Release- Hillsboro Parks Department
Tree improvements are coming to 8th Avenue near the Hillsboro Community Senior Center. Currently, 14 cherry trees in that area are deteriorating due to age, climate conditions, and pests. These trees have become a danger to people and property, as branches have fallen on the sidewalk and cars.
Tree specialists will help remove these declining trees and plant 14 new flowering trees (Crepe Myrtles as pictured) selected for beauty and climate resiliency.

Prep work and removal will begin on Thursday, February 29. In addition to the tree work, several sidewalk panels damaged by the tree roots will also be repaired. Depending on the weather, the project could take up to two weeks to replant the area fully.
Hillsboro Parks & Recreation takes removing trees very seriously and works to explore all other options to help preserve these important parts of our local ecosystem.

On the Facebook page, one of there replies says something to the effect of ” over the next 10 to 20 yrs” that’s very short life for a tree. Seems like throwing money away. Why not plant a tree that will live longer?

Do we know what’s being done with the wood? Is there opportunity to salvage the main trunk for woodworking?

Yeah. Hillsboro is “Tree City” my 🫏. Non native species are wasteful in our State. Plant the damn native Dogwood! Brings pollinators, feeds wildlife and would provide needed habitat for native animals. Crape Myrtles provide maybe 1/16th as much, and for far fewer years. Disgusting.
