One of the great things about getting out and about in our community is the opportunity to meet people from all walks of life.ย  Tuesday night, I saw old friends and made new ones in a patchwork quilt of ages, races, colors, and characters – all walks of life were represented.ย  One young Citizen introduced herself to me in front of the office on Main Street and asked if I would like to buy a raffle ticket to help her and her team of wrestlers get to Hawaii for a big tournament this Winter. In an instant, I was transported back to the trips I took as a HilHi 3-Sport athlete in the late 1970s and early 1980s, and I remembered how tough it was to scrape together some money and learn to ask for the sale and help.

Leticia Martinez is a member of the Century Jaguar Wrestling squad, and she left an impression on me.ย  As a result, I want to help her and the team sell a few more tickets to make their trip a reality.ย  I just bought three tickets, and I hope I win the beach trip, or the Meating Place package, or the gofl package, or any of them- there are 11 fantastic prize packages worth between $400 and $1,600.ย  So these raffle tickets could pay 10-20 times your investment if you win, let alone the help you can offer!

I asked Leticia if she was enjoying it and how girls’ wrestling was going.

“Well, I took 4th in the state. It was a very amazing experience for me. I have only been wrestling for 3 years. And It was a blessing and a proud moment. I couldnโ€™t have done it without the support of all my teammates. I hope to be able to secure a state title this year and take first place. Iโ€™m hoping this Maui trip helps me get more experience with different styles of the way people wrestle, so that it can only help me get better and expect what is to come,” she offered, smiling as we chatted, separated only by 45 years in our relative positions as Hillsboro folk.

Leticia Martinez is a wrestler at Century High School and was raising money to compete in Hawaii. Check out her fabulous raffle!
“Girls wrestling is an amazing sport I think it definitely uplifts you and just makes you mentally stronger as well because it is not only a physical game but a mental game. I also believe that it brings everybody really close together like a family. Wrestling has definitely changed my life and Iโ€™ve seen it change many others as well!!”
I look forward to our next meeting and a call to let me know if I won!ย  ย And I am inviting Leticia or anyone in the Century Wrestling program to become a permanent installation here at the Herald to report in on their team, the athletes, the events, and how things are going as they carry our Hillsboro brand out around the world!ย  I think Girls’ wrestling needs a voice too- she might be it!ย  Anyone who wants to work with the Herald, submit news and stories, is always welcome to contact us:ย  https://hillsboroherald.com/contact-us/

From the Century High Wrestling Team

We are excited to announce that our girls and boys’ wrestling teams have the incredible opportunity to compete in a prestigious wrestling tournament in Maui, Hawaii, during the winter of 2025. This tournament will provide our student-athletes with invaluable experience, personal growth, and the chance to represent Hillsboro on a national stage.

However, we need the support of our local community to make this dream a reality.

Thanks to our generous donors, we have gathered over $7,000 worth of items for the raffle, creating 11 items/packages to bid on that are valued between $400 and $1,600.

Prize winners will be decided by a Raffle drawing on 6/14.

The first raffle ticket drawn will have the first choice of prizes, and so on.
