Community Beautification Project Launches for the Hillsboro Post Office
Hillsboro, OR –September 12, 2025 — A new community beautification project was launched for the Hillsboro United States Post Office. Friends of the late Congresswoman Elizabeth Furse formed a nonprofit organization for the project after the post office was officially renamed the Elizabeth Furse Post Office Building of Hillsboro earlier this year through legislation sponsored by Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici, Senator Ron Wyden, and co-sponsored by every member of Oregon’s House delegation.
“We are grateful to our congressional representatives for their efforts to rename the Hillsboro Post Office in Elizabeth’s name. Natural values and beauty were hallmarks of Elizabeth’s life and work, “ said Nancy Nichols, board chair of Elizabeth’s Garden, a public charity under IRS rule501(c)(3).
The Hillsboro Post Office Building is located on First Avenue adjacent to the Hillsboro Max Light Rail Station and across from city and county government offices. As reported in a Hillsboro Herald article in November,2022, the trees surrounding the building, and those located in the parking lot, were removed in 2021 by the USPS from the federally-owned property.
According to Nichols, “Elizabeth’s Garden” was created to transform the Hillsboro Post Office into a garden of native plants and trees that reflect the love of the garden that occupied Elizabeth’s limited spare time at her farm in Helvetia. We plan to do so with the help of volunteers and funds raised for plantings, while developing partnerships with governments, the USPS, government-affiliated non-profits, and especially with downtown business interests.
Elizabeth’s Garden is hosting a fundraiser at the Helvetia Vineyards & Winery on Saturday, September 13, from 4 PM until 8 PM. The fundraiser will feature a salmon bake as well as dancing and drumming organized by Wilbur Slockish, a Klickitat tribal leader, and his family.
