I was there and it was great. I canโ€™t post photos because I donโ€™t want to make it easy for protesters to be identified. It may not matter now, but i suspect it will later on.

Very different vibe from the Portland protest I attended. So very many cars and trucks honking wildly, many with signs of their own. I brought a US flag because I think it is important to show that protesters to love their country. That said, I saw a ton of hilarious signs

I understand- Having said that over 1,000 signed up on line through the required RSVP with their names and contact info. I had people say that bothered them too. Like a targeted list of who to go after- I am on it, so if I disappear…well, you will all know.

      Thanks for going!

      Laurie,

I went to Portland with some friends. Wonderful energizing protest! Creative signs, tons of cars honking going by, and a warm feeling of community.

To the comment about signing up for protests and being identified, fear is what Trump wants from all of us. In reviewing a few comments below, folks wonder why we are protesting, well, being fearful of being identified as in the 1930s is why we protest now along with a myriad of other critical issues.

Hoping more protests are coming — let’s commit to getting others to join in.

The turn-out was very large indeed. Crowds lined both sides of 10th for blocks. Lots of cars honked in support too. Biggest protest agsinst Trump so far.

I don’t get it. What exactly are you protesting about President Trump?
Looking for waste in government? Finding people in this country?
    Identifying corruption in government?
Deporting people that have broken laws?
    People doing vandalism?
    People burning our country flag?
Stopping payments of my tax money to people fraudulent obtaining it?

Hi Allen, it sounds like you’re interested in learning more about what’s happening in this country and why so many Americans are worried about the rising authoritarianism coming from the White House. You can learn more about the cuts to veterans, cuts to schools, cuts to public health, violations of human rights and the rule of law by tuning in to a variety of news sources that aren’t Fox, Breitbart or Newsmax. My personal recommendations include the Washington Post, Vox, New York Times, Meidas Touch, MSNBC – but there are so many more reporting the truth. I don’t want to get into an online debate about what it means to love in America but what Trumps administration is up to is not freedom, or even normal. It’s fascism, it’s hatred, and it’s the same playbook used by Hitler and so many others. Most Americans don’t believe we should have US military in the streets or people being detained for no reason and with no hope of due process, it’s also not what our constitution calls for. Join us next time, it’s a great time to get to know your community

so you like what Joe Biden did. palatalizing the FBI to invade citizens homes and arrest them? Invading Catholic churches calling the theorists. Opening the boarder, saying come one come all? Had that one thing not happened our country would not be going door to door…not to mention the got aways…were are they? What are they up to. I could go on and on. We obviously have a difference of opinion so I’ll leave it at that for now.

          1. “palatalizing the FBI.” Do you have something against consonants?
          2. “Invading Catholic churches.” As a Catholic?
          3. “Opening the boarder.” I take it you don’t mean a boarding house. But I don’t understand how extending Title 42, sending more troops to the border, focusing on criminal immigration offenses, deporting people deemed public safety threats, and actually shutting the border if a certain threshold of crossings is reached was considered “opening the boarders [sic[.”

That isn’t a difference of opinion, it’s a difference of information and yours is sorely lacking.

Watch out for AI my fellow countrymen, it is easily used to deceive and spread misinformation. Especially while the biggest contributors/owners are the ones to gain from the misinformation. Zuckerberg is one of the richest people in the world and at the top of the %1 who will gain everything if the tax cuts go through as thatโ€™s the only people it was meant for. None of that was present. No bribes. No one provocatively dressed. W And while free lunch would have been nice, itโ€™s expensive to feed thousands of people, and was also not present.

In the Declaration of Independence, a “long train of abuses” was written out to show how an “establishment of an absolute Tyranny” was being created by King George III. In the list of those abuses were points like these:
        > For cutting off our Trade with all parts of the world:
        > For imposing Taxes on us without our Consent:
        > For depriving us in many cases, of the benefits of Trial by Jury:
        > For transporting us beyond Seas to be tried for pretended offences:
Now we have a president who has ordered these same actions be done to us, to all of us. Also, let me point out that being an โ€œillegalโ€ immigrant is a misdemeanor. A ~Misdemeanor~ Yet hundreds of people have been arrested without warrant, dragged from their families, not given any sort of legal hearing to prove who they are, hauled to a completely different country, and thrown in prison, all for less than a speeding ticket.

I still don’t exactly understand what everybody was protesting for? For ice? Against Trump? For deportation and immigration? I guess my only question is is if this is what we were actually protesting for, why weren’t any of these protesters helping support the local businesses that are built on immigrants?? Every business on 10th was literally empty, probably costing them hundreds and hundreds of dollars…. So you want to protest for their rights but not help support them? I’m completely baffled.

It’s was called No Kings. That’s pretty much it, we elect presidents for as many as two 4 year terms. Those presidents have limited power within our 3 equal branches of government. The protest was Americans using their 1st amendment right to remind our leaders that trump is not king.

      Dear TF,

The world seems like a scary, confusing place for you, so let’s address your concerns one by one:

      1. “I still donโ€™t exactly understand what everybody was protesting for?” It’s been explained multiple times within this comments section, as well as in the initial post.
      2. “For ice?” Context clues indicate it wasn’t pro-ICE.
      3. “Against Trump?” The “No Kings” portion of it would certainly indicate that.
      4. “For deportation and immigration?” Pick a lane.
      5. “I guess my only question is is…” Nope, you clearly had more than one question.
      6. “if this is what we were actually protesting for,” You claim not to know what “this” is, so what are we discussing here?
      7. “why werenโ€™t any of these protesters helping support the local businesses that are built on immigrants??” Are you sure they weren’t? You went into Ochoa’s and Su Casa and Supermercado Mexico, and Pepper’s and El Chino and La Michoacรกn and Emmanuel’s Bridal and the delis and the salons? You’re sure nobody went into any of them and bought anything? You’re sure nobody noticed the new salsas packets at Don Pedro?
      8. “Every business on 10th was literally empty, probably costing them hundreds and hundreds of dollars” Was it literally or probably empty? Because it doesn’t sound as if you know.
      9. “So you want to protest for their rights but not help support them?” Again, you don’t seem to know this and don’t seem to have much knowledge of the neighborhood businesses in general. Or have Moda Vaquera and Yesenia’s told you something we don’t know?
      10. “Iโ€™m completely baffled.” That much is apparent.

As much as I love a good concern troll, I’d be less concerned with an event that brings thousands of people to a commercial districtโ€”some for the first timeโ€”than an ongoing event that has people in this community afraid to leave their homes because of ICE’s presence. When those store owners you purport to care so deeply about tell Hillsboro’s mayor exactly what the problem is and why they need support, the issue isn’t with protestors who come down and do so: It’s with folks like yourself who “don’t understand” why people are afraid: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ouB04LKkRYc

I signed up. I have nothing to fear, Iโ€™m a naturalized citizen. Since weโ€™re ignoring federal law, whatโ€™s next Dirk? Taxes? Schools? Letโ€™s abolish everything federal! By the way, if there truly was a king, these protests would not have been possible.

    Reply
    • Jason Flint says:

“Iโ€™m a naturalized citizen.” That you feel this gives you “nothing to fear” is hilariously ignorant.

Not only did denaturalization increase exponentially from 2017-2020โ€”from roughly eleven cases per year from 1990 to 2017 to 1,600 cases in 2018 aloneโ€”with case referrals climbing 600% from 2017 through 2020. https://www.ilrc.org/sites/default/files/resources/denaturalization_pa.pdf

But this can’t apply to you, right? After all, you only put your name on a list for a protest. Surely that can’t come back to bite you, right?

โ€ข Illegal Procurement, or Concealment or Willful Misrepresentation (INA ยง 340(a)): Naturalization may be revoked in civil proceedings for having โ€œillegally procuredโ€ citizenship or by โ€œconcealment of a material fact or by willful misrepresentation.โ€
โ€ข The Proviso to ยง 340(a): A remnant of the Cold War, but still valid law, naturalization may be revoked for refusing under specified circumstances to testify before a congressional committee on alleged subversive activities.

Those two provisions are currently being flexed in attempts to denaturalize not only naturalized citizens convicted of crimes, but those even accused of being affiliated with gangs. During the first term, the administration sought denaturalization proceedings against naturalized citizens with discrepancies in their files or typographical errors in their paperwork.

The “subversive activities” clause of the latter has been used to explore denaturalization among those deemed “politically undesirable”โ€”with more than 22,000 U.S. citizens denaturalized during two World Wars and the Cold War’s Red Scare.

Of the federally funded services currently in place, the IRS and Department of Education aren’t of much uses to this administration and fall into the “ignoring federal law” category when it comes to proper funding and staffing. It’s only in immigration and deportation where we see the need to not only use the most robust enforcement of the law imaginableโ€”met with unsurprising cheers by the surrounding yokels, who’ve tagged Hillsboro with a slur nickname for generations for having the audacity to welcome people a few shades darker than pappy’s Klan robesโ€”and only then through politically expedient interpretations of said law.

So DB, let me summarize for Jason as his entire post is meant to scare you:

Be afraid, be very afraid! You are “hilariously ignorant” for not being afraid because your chances of being referred for denaturalization is about 0.000065% if the government can prove you came by your naturalization illegally. Meanwhile, your chances of being struck by lightning is also 0.000065%. I wouldn’t step outside if I were you!

        Reply
        • JAson Flint says:

Tell me: Do the odds of lightning strikes increase based on an administration’s whim? Because the odds of being denaturalized increased 600% during this one’s first term. And again, the bar for the government to “prove you came by your naturalization illegally” dropped from willful fraud to typographical errors on the paperwork.

          Reply
          • DB says:

Well yea, because those being denaturalized are committing criminal acts! Of course itโ€™s going to increase, especially when immigration law is being finally enforced! It seems very ignorant to consider enforcing the law passed by congress as being a โ€œkinglyโ€ thing. If I get arrested on a typo it will get resolved. If I get arrested on a willful fraud, good for the government. Theyโ€™re doing their job.

          • Jason Flint says:

            “Committing criminal acts!”

Not so much, it turns out. In 2019, when ICE pulled more than $200 million from processing to fund โ€œOperation Second Look,โ€ and during the Obama era’s โ€œOperation Janus,” the U.S. government sought pursued denaturalization of thousands of naturalized citizens despite finding that only 858 of 315,000 files in a fingerprint database of deported criminals came up again under assumed names.

“Enforcing the law passed by Congress” doesn’t involve pursuing denaturalization against either political opponents or those who’ve committed minor errors on paperwork, but it’s funny where administrative interpretation brings us.

      • DB says:

Jason, you just put the fear into all of those who signed up and are here illegally. Denaturalization? I have nothing to fear because Iโ€™m not a criminal. What did this protest accomplish? A king wouldโ€™ve put down these protests. Probably wouldโ€™ve saved a life. There are checks and balances as proven by judges dictating from the bench. I showed respect and dignity for this country by following the law and becoming a patriotic naturalized citizen. I did the same for my wife and her kids on a K1 visa. If anybody here should be upset it should be me. You ever have anybody cut in front of you while in line? Why not protest for amnesty? Why not pressure your local representatives to change the laws in Congress? I donโ€™t see anything like this being done.

        Reply
        • Jason Flint says:

Bud, hate to tell you this, but read the posts above: That fear’s already there. People in our community in various states of citizenship are in fear to the point that they don’t go out to the markets in neighborhoods where the protest happened. They don’t need me to make them afraid: The current administration and ICE are doing a bang-up job of that on their own.

“I have nothing to fear because Iโ€™m not a criminal.” Yes, because only “criminals” are being rounded up. All of those “criminal” college students and professors, “criminal” residents rousted because of paperwork discrepancies. Sorry, but it isn’t just “criminals.”

“What did this protest accomplish? A king wouldโ€™ve put down these protests. Probably wouldโ€™ve saved a life.”

Having 1.8% of the U.S. population in the street protesting is a statement, and what it accomplishes is exactly what you claim to be looking for.

“Why not protest for amnesty? Why not pressure your local representatives to change the laws in Congress?” That’s exactly what groups who showed up to the protests were looking for, and where efforts have been directed. Many protesters have called for amnesty: https://thehill.com/opinion/immigration/5342923-immigration-reform-amnesty-debate/ Members of Congress themselves showed up at the protests: https://thehill.com/homenews/senate/5357273-padilla-calls-republicans-acknowledge-protests/ Protesters are asking for both amnesty and changes to the laws, but why are certain groups so opposed to both amnesty and those proposed changes?

” I showed respect and dignity for this country by following the law and becoming a patriotic naturalized citizen. I did the same for my wife and her kids on a K1 visa. If anybody here should be upset it should be me. . You ever have anybody cut in front of you while in line?” That isn’t how it works and you know it. Someone here on an H-1B and someone here granted asylum each have the right to be here and aren’t on the same line. And if your wife and kids had their K1 and K2 visas converted to full citizenship after your marriage, then good for them. But you’ve been in Oregon too long if you thin immigration to this country is first-come, first-served.

“A king wouldโ€™ve put down these protests. Probably wouldโ€™ve saved a life.” Putting down protests never saves lives.
