The Hillsboro Herald spent hours combing through the Oregon Department of Education data released today. Known as At-A-Glance school profiles, we are posting the complete reports for the Hillsboro School District. How did your schools do? We then took the grade school report cards and made a JPEG of page one of each report, and we are releasing them for our readers’ reviews below. A full school-by-school PDF is available to open and download at the bottom of the page.
We are not ranking schools at this time, and we really do not want to do a deep dive into the cause-and-effect of why some of our elementary schools perform better than others. The range is so vast that some schools report proficiency scores 3 to 4 times higher than others. At the highest end of the range are Atfalati Ridge Grade School (new school), perennial top school Jackson Elementary, Paul Patterson, Lenox, Orenco, Tamarack (new school), and Quatama Elementary schools.
It is a fact that so goes attendance, so goes test scores.ย Also, the schools with higher percentages of kids experiencing poverty struggle to score well.ย There’s nothing new there.ย Where kids live seems to matter, too, but it shouldn’t.ย How do we fix these things?ย Could we have a new and better model?ย A lot of our schools show numbers headed upward, which is excellent.ย Some have slid some, too, and this has been another challenging year in America.
Theย Hillsboro Online Academy(HOA) and the Flex Online School, both listed in the report, are at the end of the list below. They had very impressive numbers, but the reporting is not complete. An education format that is offered online or a mix of online and in-person, like HOA, is of interest as we look at drivers of students’ academic successes and scores, too.ย They are both at the top for the largest schools in terms of total students.
We welcome your comments, observations, and debate below- keep it civil!

Background on the At-A-Glance School and District Profiles
At-A-Glance School and District Profilesย include graphics showing how a school or district compares to the statewide average in categories like regular attenders, graduation rates, median class size and more. The profiles were developed with extensive input from Oregon families, including families of historically underserved students. The data points represent a comprehensive approach to evaluating and measuring a schoolโs impact on students. In five minutes or less, parents can get the comprehensive look at their school or district that theyโve been requesting. School districts are required to make the At-A-Glance School and District Profiles available to their community.
Overview
The Oregon Department of Education (ODE) produces yearly At-A-Glance School and District Profiles for schools and districts. These reports, called for by the 1999 Oregon State legislature and the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) which is the most recent reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA), provide educators an opportunity to communicate directly with parents and community members about their schools and district.
The At-A-Glance School and District Profiles are published each year alongside the Accountability Detail Sheets. Together, the At-A-Glance School and District Profiles and the Accountability Detail Sheets comprise ODEโs larger reporting system as required by the Oregon State legislature and ESSA. The At-A-Glance School and District Profiles were designed by and for parents and community members to be an understandable and easy to read overview of how schools and districts serve their students. The Accountability Detail Sheets are more technical documents that provide information on school and district performance, improvement, and each schoolโs level of support under ESSA. The At-A-Glance School and District Profiles do not rate or grade schools and districts, and they are not used to determine levels of support under ESSA.
Here is how the Hillsboro, Oregon, elementary schools fared. These are not in order of scores but alphabetically. Parents, media, and civic leaders may ask our school district leaders many questions about these scores. Hillsboro is one of the fastest-growing cities in the Pacific Northwest and one of the wealthiest cities regarding total income, total budget, and per capita spending.
We encourage robust debate in the comments below, and you are more than welcome to respond anonymously, provided you keep it civil.ย Let’s talk about what we need to do to help our kids do better- hopefully!
