Are you one of the growing majority of Hillsboro Voters concerned with the rate of our growth and the issues it has brought? Higher crime, out-of-control utility, and housing costs, a daunting homeless problem, and the loss of our farmlands to massive concrete jungles?ย  Does that resonate with you?ย  Well, if so, it might be time for you to get active and take a stand.ย  And this candidate for City Council might be just the one for you!

Tomorrow, at the Blue-Oxe Axe Throwing venue at 264 East Main Street (old Clark’s / Copperstone); everyone is invited to meet Jake Mead, a candidate for Hillsboro City Council this fall.ย  We will be attending his campaign kick-off tomorrow from 2 pm to 4 pm to hear more from him about his platform and his run for office.ย  The local American Family Insurance agent will welcome all who attend and answer questions- now how refreshing is that?ย  We sure don’t have much of that in Hillsboro these days.

Here is more information about the event-

Discover why Jake Mead has earned the endorsement of Hillsboro City Councilors Kipperlyn Sinclair and Olivia Alcaire. As residents of Hillsboro, it’s crucial to engage with local candidates like Jake, who are deeply rooted in our community and dedicated to promoting sensible policies and infrastructure solutions for our city’s growth.

Discover more about this fourth-generation resident of Hillsboro, who is also an independent business owner and a strong advocate for thoughtful and informed progress. Don’t miss this chance to learn more and contribute to the future of our community. Join us on Saturday, June 15th at 2:00 pm at Blue Ox Axe Throwing in Downtown Hillsboro. Welcome Jake–unfortunately I just noticed this afterwards! Just the type of candidate I have been hoping for! I have noticed Kipperlyn Sinclair in action (Dirk’s endorsement of her was spot on!).

There’s a bit of an issue with the second plank of this campaign:

“2. HOSPITAL INFRASTRUCTURE: The last time our city saw a comprehensive hospital open was in 1918 with Tuality. With now an estimated 215 hospital beds for a population of over 106,000, thereโ€™s a glaring need for expansion.”

That’s not quite true. First off, Hillsboro Medical Centerโ€”now a branch of OHSUโ€”has 167 beds unto itself. In 2013, Kaiser Permanente opened Westside Medical Center and has 126 beds, with the capacity for 240.

Kaiser’s full capacity alone would give a 110,000-person Hillsboro 2.18 hospital beds per 1,000โ€”just below the national average of 2.35. Put Kaiser and OHSU’s minimal counts together, and those 293 beds already have Hillsboro at 2.66 beds per 1,000 people. That’s not only well above the national average but it’s well above the Oregon average (1.7) as well as Washington’s (1.6), Idaho’s (1.85) and California’s (1.89).

Please show us the “glaring need” for more hospital facilities here.

I think a lot of his focus is on Emergency Room beds- I can attest to how few we have of those- that is a real problem. Not sure about total beds. Let’s see what Jake has to say!

Kaiser Family Foundation and Oregon Health Statistics quote the figure in Hillsboro at 1.6 beds per capita. I believe you may be double counting some beds due to the name change from Tuality Healthcare. Links below
