Hillsboro First Tuesday Art Walk is Tuesday, October 8th, 2025- and I think everyone who can should come out.  It is a special night every month, and historic Downtown Hillsboro comes alive with art and music, not to mention the food and beverages available along the corridor.  If you have never been, put your cares aside and come really live for an evening.  If you have been 100 times, you already know.  Get to this event!

Hillsboro First Tuesday Art Walk – October 8th, 2025

During this Art Walk, one particularly special artist will be showcasing his work at the Catherine Bede Gallery (230 East Main Street- Suite D) , where a reception will be held – the best little gallery in the West!   Catherine and her gallery will be hosting a reception for the excellent Jan Shield, and she was so excited to have him that she just had to share the news with us all.

Jan Shield was my art professor and advisor for my art degree at Pacific University, where he was the longest-serving full-time faculty member (40 years); he also just turned 80 this past August and is still creating and exhibiting art. He will be showing regional ink drawings and paintings at our Artists’ Reception during the Hillsboro Art Walk on First Tuesday, October 7th, from 5-8 pm.

About Jan:

Jan Shield grew up in a family of artists and has been painting and sculpting all of his life. He is a Professor Emeritus of Art at Pacific University, Forest Grove, where he helped to generate one of the largest scholarship funds and other major donations, initiated the first and numerous travel classes, and worked to create an extensive Permanent Art Collection and personal placement of art across most buildings at Pacific University, including those in Hillsboro.
Mr. Shield’s works are included in corporate, public, and private collections across the country, including New York. He has exhibited widely throughout the Pacific Northwest in one and two-person shows, invitational shows, and juried group shows. Galleries where his works have been represented include: Lawrence Gallery, River Sea Gallery, Astoria; White Bird Gallery, Cannon Beach; and Rental Sales Gallery PAM, Portland.
Through his paintings, prints, murals, and sculptures, Jan shares his deep regard for the westernmost regions of the United States, particularly Oregon, Hawaii, Japan, China, Australia, and the Pacific Rim. His paintings, especially, are a comment on Naturalism and symbolism. Other paintings and three-dimensional forms let the viewer feel the power, richness, and substance he discovers in nature through a more abstract style of expression.

Mr. Shield is currently exhibiting work at Fairweather House and Gallery in Seaside, Oregon, and at his home and studios called Dancing Trees on the western edge of Chahalem Mountain. He is available by appointment to discuss the sale or commission of his work, as well as corporate art consultation and permanent collections placement.

I for one will be getting to the gallery, meeting Jan, seeing his work, and enjoying the best Art Walk going in Western Oregon – catch some amazing music as well featuring all of our local artists!  I hope to see you all there-
