Hillsboro Area Veterans Remembered And You Can Add Yours To The List

John R. “Dick” Granat, a lanky, blond haired mechanical engineering major from Multnomah College in Portland, and Harry B. Parker, a 27-year old Oregon State College graduate from Monmouth, had a daunting task ahead of them in September 1944.

Editors Note:  Memorial Day is reserved to honor those who have died in service to our Country.  Veterans Day has more of a focus on the living who serve or have served, but us also a time to remember the fallen.  We looked to the VA for the definition of the two days.  Here is what they said:

Many people confuse Memorial Day and Veterans Day. Memorial Day is a day for remembering and honoring military personnel who died in the service of their country, particularly those who died in battle or as a result of wounds sustained in battle. While those who died are also remembered, Veterans Day is the day set aside to thank and honor ALL those who served honorably in the military – in wartime or peacetime. In fact, Veterans Day is largely intended to thank LIVING veterans for their service, to acknowledge that their contributions to our national security are appreciated, and to underscore the fact that all those who served – not only those who died – have sacrificed and done their duty.

We wish to honor all our active-duty service men and women today, all those alive who served, and all those who passed. Today, we celebrate all of them. Please submit your active-duty, living service men and women and those who have passed in our comments section below. To all Veterans, we owe a debt of gratitude that can never be fully repaid. We thank all who serve, or have served, in any capacity at any time.  We also humbly thank their families.

Today is the day to remember, honor, and thank all of the brave men and women who served our country and the living who have served, and those who still do.  What would you be without them?  We would not be the country we are today.  In the wake of the most divisive election in year decades, we must remember how fortunate we are.  It has not been since the Civil War that we have had open warfare on our soil here in the United States.  Not that many countries can say that.   We take that for granted.

Things could have been very different if not for the men and women of our country and our community.  So, as a historian here in Hillsboro and a person who wants to remind us locally of our past, this is my attempt to have us all pause and reflect.  Some of those who were required to leave this valley and serve us in war are remembered below.  If you have someone to add to the list, we ask that you provide their name and information in the comments section below.  Everyone in the service of our country is to be remembered today!

Here are a few Veterans we can thank and remember today. This list will grow as submissions come in. Post in the comments below or email us at hillsboroherald@gmail.com .

Remembering John R, Dick Granat – post info by Ginny Mapes of Helvetia-

John R. “Dick” Granat, a lanky, blond-haired mechanical engineering major from Multnomah College in Portland, and Harry B. Parker, a 27-year-old Oregon State College graduate from Monmouth, had a daunting task ahead of them in September 1944. , Granat, the bombardier, and his crew led 41 aircraft from the 491st Bombardment Group on a difficult re-supply mission over German-occupied Holland.
The bomber was hit by German Machine gun fire, and the wing was blown up. “There goes Hunter!” a crewman in a nearby aircraft remembers someone shouting. Other squadron crews radioed frantically for the crew to bail out. . . . .“I’ll Be Seeing You” careened across a field, smashed into a copse of trees and farm buildings, and went up in flames.

Remembering Martin J Ryan of Hillsboro, Post by Bob Kehoe

Bob Kehoe submitted this: Mom’s cousin Martin J. Ryan, who was killed on Saipan in WW2. Here he’s home on leave at their home on Oak St., near where Tuality Hospital is now. Hillsboro’s VFW Post is named in his honor.

The following information about WW II Veterans was pulled from the new searchable archives of the great Hillsboro Argus. The Argus has been locked away on microfiche for decades, and the Hillsboro Historical Society decided it was time to unleash that history and bring it to the world online in a readable and searchable format.  If you can help with this worthy project with an online donation, please do so.

We have the following Veterans to honor from that database, now scanned through 1944.

The Hillsboro Herald #Salutes all of them!

Thank you for the article. I did not know that my uncle Glenn W. Perry was, or had been MIA. I believe he must have been captured by the Nazi’s and transported to a POW camp. I was also told he was a cook in the POW camp for the officer’s, which basically helped him survive by sneaking food. Glenn Perry passed away in 1969.

As a veteran myself, thank you for this article.

    Hey Dirk,

You are mixing Memorial Day and Veterans Day. Veterans Day is for the living, while Memorial Day is for those no longer with us.

    Regards,

Hi Jack! I realize that and I thank you for the reply! The VA asked us to remember the living who have served and those who are no longer with us. I thank you for your service today! Can you email me a photo to post of your service? We have added the living and several more who fell. This is your day, and we are all so grateful for your sacrifice and service to our country! Send to HillsboroHerald@gmail.com!

      Thankfully-
